Why Canada’s Labour Market Doesn’t Work

The skills mismatch that is set to become a national crisis

Critical skills shortages mean Canadian “companies are scrambling to find the skilled workers they need to survive and expand,” stated Maclean’s 2014, Guide to Jobs in Canada.

Moreover, the Government’s human resources department projected skilled jobs vacancies in Canada would be 1.5 million in 2016, and then, over the next five years, rising to 2.6 million.

Canada seeks experienced skilled tradespeople, engineers and health care workers to meet this growing demand, Canada is building responsive federal and provincial immigration programs.

The provinces experiencing the greatest need are British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Baby Boomers to RetireWith an aging

population and a generation of baby boomers set to retire, Canada will need more healthcare workers and other skilled workers to fill the employment gap. Skill shortages are expected to get worse as this generation retires.

The Skills Mismatch

While overqualified baristas serve coffee, apprenticeship programs in Canada have declined resulting in shortages of qualified workers.

In the past, the public’s outdated perception of the trades has affected enrollment in apprenticeship programs, contributing towards skills shortages. Retiring workers are expected to exacerbate the apprenticeship crisis, resulting in a shortage of experienced journeymen to train the next generation.

Also many of the acute labour shortages in Canada are in the country’s wilderness areas, away from metropolitan centers.

Filling the Gap

A key strategy in meeting the skills shortages will be International recruitment through Temporary Foreign Worker Program and economic skilled Federal and Provincial programs.
