AI chatbots often give outdated or incorrect Canadian immigration advice. Learn what recent tests revealed — and why working with licensed experts like CIP Canada protects your future.
In today’s digital world, it’s easy to ask a chatbot for immigration advice — but as a recent CIC News test revealed, that shortcut can lead you straight into trouble. AI tools may sound confident, but when it comes to Canadian immigration, even small errors can have serious consequences.
The CIC News team asked one of the world’s most advanced AI systems (ChatGPT-4o) 18 basic immigration questions. It got 11 of them wrong — mostly because the information it provided was out of date or misleading.
Here are just a few examples that show how risky “AI slop” can be when your future is on the line.
1. Express Entry Points for Job Offers – Outdated by Months
The AI claimed you could earn extra CRS points for a job offer backed by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
Reality: Those points were removed in March 2025. Anyone relying on that outdated information would have built their Express Entry profile around a rule that no longer exists — potentially wasting months of planning.
2. Category-Based Express Entry Draws – Wrong Categories, Wrong Advice
When asked about Canada’s current categories, the AI listed Transport as one and missed Education entirely.
Reality: As of February 2025, Transport was dropped, and Education was added. AI often lags behind policy changes — meaning your entire immigration strategy could be based on last year’s rules.
3. Home Care Worker Pilots – Open or Closed?
The bot said applications were open with “some caps possibly reached.”
Reality: Both streams closed on day one. One stream never reopened, despite what AI claimed. Acting on that kind of misinformation could mean missing a once-a-year opportunity.
4. Start-Up Visa Processing Times – Off by Nearly a Decade
AI confidently stated that processing takes about 53 months.
Reality: IRCC currently lists 10+ years. That’s not a small mistake — it’s a life-planning disaster for an entrepreneur betting their future on a timeline that doesn’t exist.
The Bottom Line
Immigration policies shift fast — often with little warning. What was true six months ago can be irrelevant today. AI chatbots aren’t licensed, can’t access up-to-the-minute IRCC data, and don’t take responsibility when they’re wrong.
At Canada Immigration Partners (CIP), we stay on top of every policy update and program change — so you don’t have to. Our consultants are regulated, experienced, and focused on your real eligibility, not recycled internet data.
